Allantoin as an independent marker associated with carotid intima-media thickness in subclinical atherosclerosis BJMBR
Santana,M.S.; Nascimento,K.P.; Lotufo,P.A.; Benseñor,I.M.; Meotti,F.C..
Allantoin is the main product of uric acid oxidation and was found to be augmented in atherosclerotic plaque in human autopsy and in animal models of atherosclerosis. Uric acid is abundant in human plasma and is prone to oxidation in inflammatory conditions such as atherosclerosis. In this study, we found a significant increase in plasma uric acid (P=0.002) and allantoin (P=0.025) in participants of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) that presented common carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) within the 75th percentile (c-IMT≥P75). Multiple linear regression showed an association of c-IMT with uric acid (β=0.0004, P=0.014) and allantoin (β=0.018, P=0.008). This association was independent of age, the traditional risk factor...

Biochemical profile of amniotic fluid for the assessment of fetal and renal development BJMBR
Oliveira,F.R.; Barros,E.G.; Magalhães,J.A..
Creatinine plays a key role in the function and maturation of fetal kidneys throughout pregnancy. It is important to identify other markers that may help in the diagnosis of renal dysfunction. Our aim was to determine the profile of and the correlation between biochemical markers to be used to assess renal function and maturation of the fetus in the amniotic fluid during pregnancy and to determine the distribution of normal values for creatinine, N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), ß2-microglobulin, glucose, urea, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, uric acid, albumin, and osmolality in three gestational age groups. This was a cross-section study that assessed 115 samples of amniotic fluid during three different periods of pregnancy, i.e., 13 to 20, 27...

Immunological and biochemical parameters of patients with metabolic syndrome and the participation of oxidative and nitroactive stress BJMBR
Simão,A.N.C.; Lozovoy,M.A.B.; Simão,T.N.C.; Venturini,D.; Barbosa,D.S.; Dichi,J.B.; Matsuo,T.; Cecchini,R.; Dichi,I..
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a multifactorial disease involving inflammatory activity and endothelial dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the changes in lipoperoxidation, in immunological and biochemical parameters and nitric oxide metabolite (NOx) levels in MS patients. Fifty patients with MS (4 males/46 females) and 50 controls (3 males/47 females) were studied. Compared to control (Mann-Whitney test), MS patients presented higher serum levels (P < 0.05) of fibrinogen: 314 (185-489) vs 262 (188-314) mg/dL, C-reactive protein (CRP): 7.80 (1.10-46.50) vs 0.70 (0.16-5.20) mg/dL, interleukin-6: 3.96 (3.04-28.18) vs 3.33 (2.55-9.63) pg/mL, uric acid: 5.45 (3.15-9.65) vs 3.81 (2.70-5.90) mg/dL, and...

Influence of Pine Bark Tannin on Bacterial Pathogens Growth and Nitrogen Compounds on Changes in Composted Poultry Litter Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Arzola-Alavarez,C; Castillo-Castillo,Y; Anderson,RC; Hume,ME; Ruiz-Barrera,O; Min,BR; Arzola-Rubio,A; Beier,RC; Salinas-Chavira,J.
ABSTRACT To study the antimicrobial and uric acid-preserving activity of pine bark tannin on poultry litter composting, antibiotic-free wood chip-based poultry litter was distributed (11 g) to 50-mL conical centrifuge tubes and immediately amended with 1.3 mL0.4 M sodium phosphate buffer (control) or with 1.3 mL condensed tannins from pine bark (Pinus palustris; 9 % tannin wt/vol in water). All tubes (n = 3 tubes/treatment) were inoculated with a novobiocin and naladixic acid-resistant Salmo-nella typhimurium (STNN) to achieve 3.0 log10 CFU/g and incubated at 37oC for 3 days to simulate an initial compost period. Wildtype E. coli and the challenge STNN strain as well as concentrations of ammonia, uric acid and urea were measured on days 0 and 3. Pine bark...

Resveratrol inhibits the intracellular calcium increase and angiotensin/endothelin system activation induced by soluble uric acid in mesangial cells BJMBR
Albertoni,G.; Schor,N..
Resveratrol (Resv) is natural polyphenol found in grapes. This study evaluated the protective effect of Resv against the effects of uric acid (UA) in immortalized human mesangial cells (ihMCs). ihMCs were preincubated with Resv (12.5 µM) for 1 h and treated with UA (10 mg/dL) for 6 or 12 h. The intracellular calcium concentration [Ca2+]i was quantified by fluorescence using flow cytometry. Angiotensinogen (AGT) and pre-pro endothelin-1 (ppET-1) mRNA were assayed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Angiotensin II (AII) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) were assayed by ELISA. UA significantly increased [Ca2+]i. Pre-incubation with Resv significantly reduced the change in [Ca2+]i induced by UA. Incubation with UA for 6 or 12 h also increased AGT mRNA expression and AII...

The influence of starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection on the nitrogenous products of degradation in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris BABT
Souza,Rosana M. de; Gomes,Edna M.; Chagas,Generoso M.; Pinheiro,Jairo.
The urea and uric acid contents in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris were analyzed under starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection during 30 days. The urea and uric acid contents in the uninfected and fed snails were 15.090 mg/dl and 9.399 mg/dl, respectively, being the urea/uric acid ratio 1.6. The urea content in starved snails increased to a maximum of 363.237 mg/dl at 15 days, and the uric acid varied to a maximum of 11.470 mg/dl. The urea content in infected snails was reduced to a minimum of 2.123 mg/dl at 30 days of infection and the uric acid increased significatively at 25 days post exposure, being 13.820 mg/dl. A significative relation was not observed between the time of starvation and time of E. coelomaticum infection and the uric...
